How To Deal With Toxic People

Being around toxic people is exhausting. They have a tendency to project their insecurities onto those around them. They refuse to admit when they’re wrong, and they will go to any length to make their point. You might even find toxic personalities altering facts or challenging your memory.

A toxic person is anyone who brings negativity or unhealthy emotions into your life. They’re manipulative, controlling and unsupportive. Did you ever notice that drama follows these individuals around?

So, how do you deal with these toxic personalities? Even if these people came with a warning label, it might not be easy to avoid them. Let’s talk about a few ways to deal with toxic people.

 1. Set your boundaries

It is extremely important to set personal boundaries when dealing with toxic individuals. Decide on what you will and will not put up with. After your boundaries are determined, do not compromise on them.

2. Ignore them

Yes, it can feel awfully rude to ignore someone. However, if your personal wellbeing is at stake, it may be the right thing to do. A good method to try is called “grey rocking”. When a toxic person is interacting with you, imagine yourself as a grey rock (dull, boring, emotionless). By not giving toxic people the reaction they are looking for, you’re not giving them any fuel for their fire.

3. Accept that toxic people may not change

It can be tempting to keep people in our lives with hopes they’ll suddenly change all of their negative traits. However, this isn’t a reasonable expectation. It may even be tempting to try and help. Toxic people will not change unless they truly want to.

4. Don’t be baited into every argument

Choose your battles and choose them wisely. Do not exhaust all of your precious energy on people that will suck it dry.

5. Give yourself time to decompress after dealing with a toxic person

After dealing with a toxic person, you might find yourself a bit more on edge. You may be more likely to get into an argument of your own. Be sure to take time to decompress after dealing with a toxic personality.

Unfortunately, toxic personalities are going to be everywhere in our life. You may encounter these people at work, school, or even in your own family. What is most important, is learning what our boundaries are and taking care of ourselves.

The best you can do is respect them. It can be difficult because they are toxic. Be nice at least to them!

I had to cut all ties to the most toxic person in my life, my mother, and to this day still does not know what she did wrong and blames me for everything, 50 years + of everything. The day I cut the cord, is the day I started living and enjoying life something that I had no idea was this wonderful.

I've definitely dealt with a good amount of toxic people in my life. I would agree that it's important to set boundaries with them because you have to protect your own mental health and emotions.
