It’s no secret that I love journaling. When it comes to writing down your thoughts, there are just so many positive benefits worth mentioning. Journaling helps me track my thoughts and process my emotions.
Journaling is also one of my favorite ways to reflect on my own life and track the progress I have made. There are so many different types of journals to choose from – so its definitely worth experimenting to see what kind you like best.
Many people believe the new moon is a great time to start a journaling practice, and they’re not wrong! This is because the new moon is a time of new beginnings and growth. It’s the perfect time to set your intentions and think about your future plants.
So, what is the new moon? Technically, it is the first phase of the moon cycle and occurs when the moon is between the sun and the Earth.
Using the phases of the moon to journal is a really fun and unique way to organize your practice. Each new moon offers a fresh start, as well as the opportunity to set new goals for yourself. Here are a few journal prompts for the new moon to help get you started.

1. What do I want to achieve this month?
Think of anything you may want to achieve in the next few weeks, big or small. Then, write down your goals and track your progress. It doesn’t have to be anything huge, even just completing a book counts as an achievement!
2. What steps can I take this month to achieve my goals?
After taking some time to identify your goals, think about how you can work on achieving them. Write down an action plan and take small steps to avoid overwhelm.
3. What can I do to make progress on my goals from last month?
Is there anything you didn’t achieve or complete last month? If so, don’t worry. Reflect on the previous month and think of the things you can do to move closer to your goals. Come up with a new action plan and comb through the details of what may have stood in your way.
4. What are my intentions for this new moon? What do I want to manifest?
Setting intentions is a powerful practice for the new moon. Focus on your intentions and anything in particular you may be looking to attract. I would also add some positive affirmations to your journal to help strengthen your overall vision.
5. What lessons did I learn this past month?
I truly believe that every single day has a lesson to be learned. Think over the last month and any new insight you may have gained. You can learn a little something from every experience you have if you look closely enough.
6. What were the high points and low points of the last month?
It’s important to reflect on our good days as well as our bad days. Were there any significant moments that made you happy or unhappy? This is also a good way to identify patterns in your life and areas that could use a little improvement.
7. What was my favorite thing about this month?
Going forward, think of anything you can repeat this month that was really special from the previous month. Write down your favorite memory or experience. You can highlight or tag these pages so they’re easier to find as well. Whenever you need a little inspiration or a positive pick-me-up, revisit these memories.
8. What was my least favorite thing about this month?
Similar to looking back on positive things, think of your least favorite thing from the month that has just passed. Reflect on your frustrations and the ways you can avoid them and prepare for the weeks ahead.
9. What were my biggest accomplishments this month?
Write down your successes and don’t be afraid to celebrate them! Be sure to give yourself the credit you deserve for any hard work you have put in.
10. What were my biggest failures this month?
Of course, it’s important to learn from our failures, no matter how big or small. What things can you do differently going forward? Perhaps you want to organize your your life a little better. Or, you may want want to focus on being more positive.
11. What didn’t I have time for this month?
Too often, it feels like there just isn’t enough time in the day to get things done. It’s possible you may have had to skip some things this past month due to lack of time. Be sure to write them down and figure out how you can make more time for these things in the future.
12. What was the biggest challenge I faced this month?
While it’s healthy your challenge yourself, sometimes unexpected challenges come out of the blue. Was there a difficult conversation you had to have this past month? Or, did you have a big project at work to complete? Think of your challenges and how they made you stronger.
13. What did I do to overcome challenges I faced?
If there is one way to feel more confident and empowered, it’s thinking of all the ways we have overcome challenges. Reflecting on this can also help us overcome new challenges that may present themselves in the upcoming weeks.
14. How can I make sure I stick to my goals and resolutions this month?
Making plans and goals is one thing, but sticking to them is a whole other challenge. Accountability is key. There are lots of ways to stick to your goals and stay on track, so think of the steps you will take to hold yourself accountable.
15. Who would I like to spend more time with this month?
It’s a little crazy how quickly time seems to go by. Sometimes, months can fly by and we realize we haven’t seen a friend or family member for quite some time. In the next few weeks, make an effort to connect with some people you haven’t spent quality time with for awhile.
16. What can I do to make this month more productive?
Productivity is something many people struggle with. Whether it’s working on your schedule or managing your time better, try and think of a few ways you can make the month ahead more productive. Then, create a plan and write it in your journal.
17. What can I do to change up my routine this month?
If you’re happy with your current routine, then you can probably skip this prompt. Personally, I always like to tweak my routine and work on things. Try shaking up your routine by experimenting with new activities or hobbies. See what works for you.
18. What books would I like to read or complete this month?
If you’re anything like me, you have a lot of half-read books on the shelf. I don’t know why I can’t seem to finish all of them! Reading is a great way to relax, so do yourself a favor and incorporate more reading into your routine this month. You could also challenge yourself by reading a motivational book or something out of your comfort zone.
19. What can we do as a family to make this month special?
Spending time with family and loved ones is the key to happiness. At least, I believe this is true. Brainstorm some fun activities you can do as a family in the next few weeks.
20. What am I grateful for this month?
Take a few minutes to write down all the things you’re grateful for. It doesn’t need to be anything significant or large. Even the change of the seasons is worth recognizing and being happy about!
21. What new skills would you like to learn or expand on this month?
I try and learn a few new skills every year. It helps keep the mind sharp and helps me stay on my feet. If there are any new skills or hobbies you’re looking to get your feet wet with, this month may be a good time to start.
22. What did I learn about myself this past month?
The journey of self-discovery truly is lifelong. I like to stop and think about all the things I may have learned about myself as the months come to an end. It really helps change up your perspective and promotes personal growth.
23. Going into next month, what do I need to work on?
There is no shame in working on yourself. In fact, I think it’s something that should be done continuously. If you had any struggles over the last few weeks, work on making a plan for how you can improve going forward.
In many cultures, the new moon is a time of renewal and self-reflection. It’s the ideal time to start fresh and set new goals. No matter what your aspirations may be, this is a good time to set your intentions.
