Nine Dimensions Of Wellness

The nine dimensions of wellness are a concept describing different aspects of an individual’s well-being. The wellness process works in a cycle, with each dimension reinforcing the preceding dimensions. As an individual works on improving one dimension, he/she will begin positively affecting the other dimensions as well.

Intellectual Wellness

This dimension pertains to the individual’s capacity and motivation for thinking and learning. Wellness is achieved when people can think clearly, logically, and positively about themselves and their world. People who are intellectually well-off typically enjoy learning, thinking, and challenging themselves to think about new concepts. Those who are intellectually well are often better problem solvers, more creative, and have higher rates of learning. They tend to be good critical thinkers, which can lead to a more fulfilling social-life.

Tips for intellectual wellness:

  • Stay educated.
  • Read interesting books, newspapers, and magazines daily.
  • Listen to uplifting music daily.
  • Watch TV shows, movies, and news programs that are positive.
  • Learn new skills at least once a year.

Physical Wellness

This dimension refers to an individual’s ability to adapt and self-manage in his or her physical environment. Wellness occurs when people can manage their health, deal with stress effectively, and understand the factors that influence their health. People who are physically well tend to be healthy, energetic, determined, and strong. They can adapt well, handle change effectively, and are often more productive in life.

Tips for physical wellness:

  • Maintain healthy eating habits
  • Learn how to manage stress in healthy ways.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Get enough exercise daily.

Spiritual Wellness

This dimension refers to an individual’s sense of purpose in life and capacity for openness, trust, optimism, acceptance, hope, love, and faith. True wellness is reached when individuals can experience personal transformation through connection with others and through encounters with the natural world. Spiritually well people possess gratitude, reverence, compassion, tolerance and moderation. They are usually aware of their values and beliefs and the impact they have on their lives. They are open to new ideas and experience calmness and deep-seated happiness.

Tips for spiritual wellness:

  • Make time for spiritual practice, whether it’s reading books on self-help and spirituality, doing meditation, or connecting with people in your personal or professional life.
  • Take part in activities that promote self-discovery and personal growth, such as yoga, tai chi, or other mind-body activities.
  • Live in the present moment as much as possible.
  • Practice gratitude daily.

Environmental Wellness

This aspect of wellness pertains to how well people live within their own neighborhoods and communities. Being “environmentally healthy” involves having positive relationships with family members, friends, neighbors, the local community, and the greater environment. People who live in a supportive community and have strong social networks tend to be more emotionally and physically well. People who take time each day for reflection and relaxation, engage in moderate physical activity, and have healthy coping strategies are usually environmentally well.

Tips for environmental wellness:

  • Be involved in your neighborhood and community.
  • Volunteer at least once a month for an organization that you believe in.
  • Get involved in a project that gives back to your community.

Occupational Wellness

This dimension is a person’s ability to manage his or her work life, achieve a healthy balance between work and non-work responsibilities, meet career goals, function with vigor at work, and make personal contributions through paid work. People who are occupationally well tend to be productive and successful in their careers. They function well under pressure and are able to adapt to change.

  • Do what you love, whether it’s taking up a new hobby or learning a language.
  • Set goals for work and personal life balance.
  • Set boundaries regarding work and personal life.
  • Get enough rest each night.
  • Prioritize your needs first.

Social Wellness

A person’s social wellness is how he or she manages relationships with friends and family as well as with other groups, such as clubs, teams, associations, etc. People who are socially well interact with others in healthy ways. They have strong, positive relationships and handle conflict constructively. They usually have the support of others and know how to establish boundaries with others.

Tips for social wellness:

  • Make an effort to get involved with your community and the world.
  • Improve communication skills in all capacities.
  • Be open to change.
  • Make time for family and friends.

Emotional Wellness

This aspect of wellness pertains to an individual’s happiness and quality of life. It includes managing stress effectively in negative situations. In addition, it involves having a positive image about self and one’s life. People who are emotionally well are flexible in their thinking, solve problems effectively, and manage difficult or distressing emotions constructively. Emotionally well people are also able to balance work, family, and personal life priorities.

Tips for emotional wellness:

  • Avoid putting pressure on yourself to constantly be happy.
  • Have self-compassion, especially when you are struggling.
  • Be mindful of negative thoughts and beliefs that may be affecting your life.
  • Practice self-reflection and express your feelings in a healthy way.

Financial Wellness

This dimension concerns the individual’s capacity for managing his or her financial affairs and securing personal financial security. People who are financially well tend to be able to manage their money effectively, pay bills on time, and not over-extend themselves. They also are less stressed about money and tend to live within their means.

Tips for financial wellness:

  • Make a budget and keep track of your expenses.
  • Before making a purchase, ask yourself whether you really need it or not.
  • Pay off any debt as quickly as possible.
  • Invest in yourself and your future by continuing to educate yourself.

Nutritional Wellness

This dimension describes a person’s capacity to obtain, prepare and consume nutritious foods as well as understand the connection between diet and health. People who are nutritionally well tend to have a balanced diet and understand the benefits of healthy food choices. They also understand the health detriments of a poor diet and seek information on food labels and nutrition.

Tips for nutritional wellness:

  • Eat a well-balanced diet.
  • Understand how what you eat affects your health
  • Eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables every day.
  • Make healthy food choices when you are grocery shopping.
  • Plan meals in advance.
  • Reduce stress to avoid binging on unhealthy foods.

The nine dimensions of wellness can be used to improve a person’s life. The first step towards achieving the highest level of wellness possible is understanding how personal health is influenced by these nine distinct dimensions. The more a person practices these dimensions in their daily life, the better their health will be. It is important to make a healthy lifestyle a part of your daily routine, regardless of how busy you are. This will help in maximizing the physical and mental benefits that come with practicing wellness in all areas of lifestyle.

Make a conscious effort to practice all nine dimensions of wellness on a daily basis, and if possible, set small goals for yourself that should lead to improved wellness over time.
