Often, I fall asleep to meditations or spoken affirmations. I don’t always have the time during the day to practice meditation to be mindful. I know that isn’t good, and that I should make time, but it just doesn’t always happen.
Listening to affirmations while falling asleep quickly became one of my favorite practices. But, does it work?

When I talk about “affirmations working”, there is a lot to be said about that. Affirmations take a lot more than just reciting positive phrases to yourself. You really need to adapt a positive mindset to ensure they are effective. They are a powerful tool in your toolbox.
It’s essential to approach affirmations positively. They really can influence our mindset and our emotions. By replacing your negative thoughts with more positive ones, you can boost your optimism and confidence. And, it’s very simple to do!
For me, affirmations definitely work while I am sleeping. But, I have noticed some patterns.
- It is essential that I have a good, deep sleep. If I listen to affirmations and do not sleep well, often I don’t feel as though they are effective. The brain can absorb new information during certain sleep cycles, so it is important to have a good nights rest if you’re listening to affirmations.
- I always use affirmations in the present tense to be the most effective. For example saying “I am”, and personalizing the affirmations helps me resonate with them more easily. When I am sleeping, I am listening to these present tense affirmations being spoken by someone else. You can also use a self-recording.
- It’s important to visualize your desired outcome while affirming. This is important when saying affirmations during the day, or using them for sleep.
- I combine sleep affirmations with daytime affirmations when possible. This could be the simple act of journaling before bed, or leaving a positive affirmation sticky note around the house.
Making Affirmations Work While You Sleep

Here are some tips to get the most of your affirmations at bedtime.
- Choose affirmations that resonate with your personal goals and beliefs. This way, your subconscious can better accept them as truth.
- Be consistent. Try listening to affirmations every night as part of your routine.
- Be sure you are comfortable. Use a good speaker volume or comfortable headphones. You want to hear the affirmations being spoken, but you don’t want them to be too loud.
- Keep your affirmations personal and present tense. Use a recording of yourself to listen to before bed, or listen to someone that utilizes “I am” affirmations.
- Make sure your environment is comfortable. If you don’t sleep well, you won’t feel well.
While there is no guarantee that affirmations will be successful for you while you sleep, it is something I practice on a regular basis and I find that they work for me. There hasn’t been a lot of research on affirmations while sleeping. But, there is plenty of research showing affirmations are an effective tool.
It takes me some time to fall asleep as well. So, I am still able to process and absorb the affirmations in my waking state right before bed. Let me know what your experience is using affirmations right before bed, or while sleeping at night.
