As a creative person, you know that moments of inspiration don’t always come easily. It can be really difficult to get through artist block when those moments of inspiration don’t come at all. In fact, it can be downright overwhelming and discouraging. I get it, I’ve been there myself many times. Where is the muse when you need her?
There’s nothing worse than feeling like you’ve reached a creative roadblock and can’t find your way out. Over the years, I have developed a few effective strategies for overcoming my artist block, and I want to share them with you so you can avoid these same roadblocks in your life.
One of the most important things to remember with artist block is that it is completely normal. Everyone experiences creative slumps at times, and that doesn’t make you any less of an artist or creator. It’s important to take a step back and recognize that it’s just part of the creative process, and it truly happens to the best of us.
You don’t need to be a successful painter to be considered a creative, either. Creativity comes in many forms. Whether you are a writer, a blogger, a web developer, or a hairdresser, artist block can still get the best of you.
What is artist’s block?
Artist block is when creative people experience the sensation of being “stuck” or unable to find inspiration to create things. It can take on many different forms. You may feel like your ideas have all dried up, or you may feel overwhelmed with pressure to create the next best thing.
It can be incredibly frustrating, but it doesn’t have to be a permanent obstacle. If you implement the right strategies, it’s completely possible to break through these creative roadblocks.

Why does artist block happen?
Artist block can happen for many reasons. You may be fatigued or burnout, or you may be stuck in a creative rut. Sometimes, the muse doesn’t show herself so easily. You may also have anxiety about the quality of your work, or feel overwhelmed with self-doubt. These doubts can prevent you from taking (important) creative risks. Or, you may be taking on too many projects at once. This can cause your creativity to “plug up” as you’re unsure what projects to prioritize.
No matter what the cause is for you personally, know that it’s not uncommon. It happens to everyone from time to time, and there are lot’s of ways to break free from it.
8 Ways To Get Over Artist Block
1. Take a step back
Taking a step back from your work is an effective way to break through artist block. Sometimes, your brain needs a little break so it can reconnect with your creative process. So, give yourself some space before you get too overwhelmed.
Take a break from your creative project and allow the fire to ignite again on it’s own. It’s truly amazing what a little bit of space can do for the creative spirit.
2. Switch up your environment
This is one of my favorite tips for getting over artist block. Changing up your environment can give you a fresh perspective and help boost your inspiration. Try working at a new place to help recharge your creativity. You can check out a local park, café, or even a different room in your house.
Or, take a trip somewhere new and find inspiration on the go. When you work in the same space everyday, its easy to feel creative fatigue. Even changing up your home décor can help tremendously with inspiration.
3. Get inspired by other people
Normally, I recommend people stay off of social media for their mental health. But in this case, there is an exception to this rule. If you’re feeling artist block, try following some inspiring artists on social media. You can also attend an art show or read some creative books. Go wherever you need to go to feel inspiration and get your creative juices flowing again.
4. Revisit old projects and ideas
Believe it or not, revisiting your own work is a great source for inspiration. Look through some of your old ideas and see if there is any way you can improve them or change up their direction. You may be surprised by what kind of solutions or inspiration you may find when you revisit your past.
5. Meditate
I talk about meditation all the time, and for good reason. It’s an effective way to break through mental blocks that may be hindering your creativity. Whenever you feel stuck, try to make some time for mindfulness. You can write in a journal, color in an adult coloring book, or try a free meditation on YouTube. Clearing the mind does wonders for creativity and motivation.
6. Try a new form of art
Sometimes, stepping out of our comfort zone and trying something new can help inspire us. So, expand your horizons if you’re feeling stuck. Experiment with a new tool, or a completely different medium. You never know what will spark your interest and help inspire you.
7. Chat with other artists
Exchanging ideas and getting feedback from other creatives can help us break through mental blocks. It can also be therapeutic to talk through our artist block with other people that can relate. Or, bounce ideas with someone else can be incredibly motivating.
Don’t underestimate the power of conversation and brainstorming! If you don’t have any likeminded friends in your circle, consider joining a web form and chatting with people who have similar creative interests as you.
8. Consider the bigger picture
It’s important to always consider the bigger picture when you’re feeling uninspired. Ask yourself, why did you start this project? Try to reconnect with the feelings you had when you were inspired. Connecting with your original vision can help give us a restored sense of direction.
Next time you’re feeling stuck in your creative endeavors, I hope these tips help you break free from your artist block. Remember, it will eventually pass, and you will be back to your creative self again in no time!
