In a world where we are constantly bombarded with images of “perfect” celebrities and models, how do you stop comparing your looks to others? It’s no wonder that so many of us feel insecure about our own appearances. It’s important to remember that everyone is unique and beautiful in their own way. (I know, you’ve heard that a million times and you’re sick of it, I kind of am too). It’s true though! We all have our own set of unique talents and our own goals to accomplish.
If you find yourself scrolling through social media and stuck in a comparison trap, try to take a step back and remember that most people only post the best versions of themselves. No one is perfect, and influencers aren’t jumping at the opportunity to post their messy bun and no makeup days. They’re only posting their highlight reel.
It’s also important to recognize the amount of work that goes into achieving those “perfect” images. Most of the time, there’s a lot of editing, contouring, and filtering happening behind the scenes. We’re all human beings, and none of us are expected to look like a movie star at all times of the day.
That being said, here are some practical tips to help you when you’re feeling down about your appearance:
1. Accept yourself for who you are
This may seem easier said than done, but it’s important to remember that you are perfect just the way you are. Embrace your quirks and imperfections – they make you who you are! If this is difficult for you, try seeking out others who share your quirks. For example, if you are insecure about your freckles, find some well-known celebrities that love their freckles and use them for inspiration. You can also try positive affirmations to help you on your self-love journey.
2. Focus on your own progress
Instead of fixating on how you compare to others, focus on your own progress and growth. While it’s easy to recognize the success of others, take a step back and focus on your own achievements. Whether it’s losing weight, gaining muscle, or simply working on being more creative, celebrating your own accomplishments can help boost your confidence. Take a look at all the hard work you have done. Journaling is my favorite way of tracking progress. There’s nothing like looking back on old journal entries to see how far you’ve come from your past self!
3. Don’t compare yourself to unrealistic standards
Like I said before, the images we see in the media are often heavily edited and retouched. Comparing yourself to these unrealistic standards is only setting yourself up for disappointment. Next time you see an image and you find yourself comparing yourself to it, take a deeper look at the image itself.
4. Surround yourself with positive people
Negativity breeds more negativity. So surround yourself with people who make you feel good about yourself. These positive influences can help you see yourself in a more positive light.
5. Be mindful of your thoughts
Our thoughts have a lot of power over how we feel about ourselves. If you find yourself constantly comparing your looks to others, make a conscious effort to redirect your thoughts to more positive ones. Practicing meditation or mindfulness can help you live in the present moment and also become more aware of your negative feelings.
6. Get off social media
We’re social creatures, so it’s normal to be active on various social media platforms. However, social media can be a major source of comparison anxiety. If you find yourself constantly comparing your looks to others, try taking a break from your social media account or limit your time on it. Even better, unfollow any accounts that make you feel bad about yourself.
7. Compliment yourself
One of the best ways to stop comparing your looks to others is to start complimenting yourself! Every time you catch yourself thinking something negative about your appearance, counter it with a positive thought. For example, “I don’t like my thighs” could be replaced with “I’m so grateful for my strong legs that allow me to do things I love.” Stop the self-hate and never say something about yourself that you wouldn’t say about your best friend.
8. Compliment others
When you focus on the positive qualities of others, it can help you see the beauty in everyone, including yourself. Complimenting others spreads positivity. And, you never know – your compliments might just make someone’s day. It’s possible the person you are complimenting struggles with low self-esteem or has negative feelings about their physical appearance.
9. Practice gratitude
Whenever you find yourself feeling down about your appearance, take a moment to think about all the things you’re grateful for. Maybe you’re thankful for your health or your loving friends and family members. Whatever it is, consider writing it down in a gratitude journal or somewhere you can reflect on it. 10. Talk to someone
A therapist can help you work through any negative thoughts and feelings you have about your appearance. Nowadays, it’s easier than ever to find a therapist that’s a good fit for you (even online!). They may be able to recommend some great resources to help you live your best life.
11. Remember that some comparison is normal.
It’s important to remember that some comparison is normal and even healthy. Comparison can be motivating and help us strive to be our best selves. It only becomes a problem when it starts to impact our self-esteem and confidence.
12. Be patient with yourself
Change doesn’t happen overnight, so be patient with yourself as you work on self-love. It may take some time, but eventually, you’ll get to a place where you’re happy and confident with your own appearance.
13. Practice self care
One of the best things you can do for your body image and your mental health is to practice self care. This includes eating healthy, exercising, getting enough sleep, and taking time for yourself. When you take care of yourself, it shows in your appearance – and in your confidence.
14. Seek out positive role models
Looking up to someone who has a positive body image can help you see the beauty in yourself. Find someone whose confidence you admire, and use them as motivation to love your own appearance.
15. Focus on your strengths
Instead of fixating on your perceived flaws, focus on your strengths. What do you like about yourself? What are you proud of? When you focus on your positive qualities, it can help you see yourself in a more positive light. Making a vision board is a great way to visually represent your strengths. Place it somewhere you will see it on a regular basis.
16. Don’t compare your worst to someone else’s best
It’s important to remember that everyone has good and bad days – including you. So, don’t compare your worst to someone else’s best. Everyone has their own unique set of flaws, and that’s what makes them special.
17. Be kind to yourself
Talk to yourself the way you would talk to a friend. Would you say the things you’re thinking about yourself to someone you care about? If not, then why are you saying them to yourself? Practicing kindness and compassion is an important part of self-love.
18. Do what makes you confident
Dress in a way that makes you feel good about yourself. Wear a little makeup on your days off. Splurge on getting your nails done when you need a pick-me-up. When you feel confident, it shows – and that can help you see the beauty in yourself.
19. Challenge your negative thoughts
If you find yourself thinking negative thoughts about your appearance, challenge them. Are they really true? Why are you thinking of them? When you challenge your negative thoughts, it can help you see yourself in a more positive light. Also remember to keep challenging yourself.
20. Focus on your achievements, not your looks
One of the best ways to improve your body image is to focus on your achievements, not your looks. When you accomplish something, it shows that you’re so much more than just your appearance. Remember, we’re all on our own journey.
21. Don’t let others define you
You are the only one who gets to define yourself. So, don’t let others do it for you. If someone makes a negative comment about your appearance, don’t let it get to you. Remember that their opinion doesn’t matter – only yours does. Also, who cares what the rest of the world thinks?!
22. Find other things to focus on
When you find yourself fixating on your appearance, find something else to focus on. Maybe there is a new hobby you have been looking to take up. When you focus on other things, it can help you see yourself in a more positive light.
If you find yourself playing the comparison game, remember that accepting yourself for who you are is the first step to boost your confidence and self-esteem. You’re the only person that can do this, and it’s important to remember you’re living your own life! Don’t let social comparisons be a thief of joy. I know it’s easier said than done (especially with the rise of social media and all the unrealistic beauty standards).
The best thing you can do is embrace your flaws and love yourself unconditionally. Remember, no matter who you are, there is someone out there who would definitely swap places with you in a heartbeat.
So, cherish what you have, love yourself for who you are, and be confident in your own skin! After all, you are the only one who gets to live in it!
